One utilizes the cartridge port, the other replicates the functionality of the 1541 disk drive- both allow the loading of vast amounts of software that can be loaded and executed much faster than the Datasette ever could. The next step up would be something like an EasyFlash cartridge or an SD2IEC device. Full disclosure, my search was far from exhaustive, but I don't recall ever seeing such a device before. A female connector for that port is relatively easy to get, but you'd be more or less building a device up from there, which may be more trouble than it's worth. I looked around and while I found a few devices that made use of that port, and regret to say I didn't find anything that would replace the functionality you're looking for- at least not out of the box. The next step up would be some sort of adapter to connect the cassette/user port to something modern. I did this a few times when I first got into the C64 scene, and it works just fine for the software that can be loaded via cassette. Adapting in one of those car cassette adapters would do the same thing using original hardware with original cassettes. A quick eBay search has multiple results for units that are between $20 and $40. For this you have a few options, and it really comes down to what you want to do with your C64 and your budget.įirstly, the datasette itself.
